Jared Tomich, a 1992 Lake Central graduate, played four years for the Indians lettering and making all state honors before walking on at the University of Nebraska. Tomich, an Indiana All State defensive end and native of St. John, Ind., wasn’t recruited out of Lake Central high school. Rather the Nebraska University defensive coordinator, Charlie McBride, had heard about Tomich from an old high school coaching buddy and asked Tomich to walk on at Nebraska.

Tomich, then labeled a “Prop 48” player, was not academically eligible to play and sat out 1993 while gaining academic eligibility. Tomich joined the Huskers as a defensive end and became a key player to help lead the Cornhuskers to 2 of their 3 National Championship titles. After earning All-American honors as a rush end in 1995 and 1996 Tomich closed his career with 91 total tackles, including 26 tackles for loss and 16 sacks. Ten of Tomich's sacks came as a junior in 1995, when he helped one of the most dominant Nebraska University defenses in school history. This defense was ranked No. 2 nationally with just 78.4 rushing yards allowed per game. A finalist for the Lombardi Award, Tomich was also extremely active in the community and earned a spot on the CFA Good Works Team in 1996 and Brook Berringer Citizenship Team at Nebraska University. Tomich was granted the honor of being named A University of Nebraska Hall of Fame recipient in 2006.

Tomich was a second-round NFL Draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 1997, chosen by Coach Mike Ditka. He spent four seasons with the Saints from 1997 through 2000, before moving onto the Green Bay Packers for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Tomich closed his career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2003.

Tomich is currently living in Northwest Indiana where he has opened a few businesses including his family focused gym FUEL Fitness located in Cedar Lake, Zuni’s House of Pizza in both Dyer and Cedar Lake and also The Engine Room Alehouse in Dyer. Tomich has continued his involvement in various charitable organizations in the area and is the founder of Halo of Hope Foundation. Tomich’s foundation allows children stricken by cancer to attend week long camps across the United States. His plan is to grow his foundation so that more children can attend these life changing camps as well as assisting these families with tutoring, counseling, financial support and fundraising.
